What Kindergarten Teachers in Clark County Really Want (It’s Not Just ABCs)

We talk to CCSD kindergarten teachers. Here’s what they tell us they actually want on Day 1:

They don’t need every child to read. They need children who can:

1. Regulate and Listen: Sit for 10 minutes for a story, follow 2-step directions ("Put your backpack away and wash your hands"), and manage big feelings with words.

2. Be Independent: Zip their own jacket, open their lunchbox, use the bathroom alone, and ask for help when needed.

3. Be a Good Friend: Take turns, share, wait in line, show empathy, and use kind words when they’re frustrated.

4. Have Strong Hands and Bodies: Hold a pencil correctly, cut with scissors, balance, hop, and climb.

The Butterfly Method: Our 4 Wings of Readiness

At Destinee's Butterflies Childcare LLC in North Las Vegas 89032, every day from age 2 to 5 is intentionally building toward kindergarten.

WING 1: Confidence — "I Can Do It Myself"

We don’t do things FOR children that they can learn to do themselves.

Toddlers pour their own water from small pitchers

Preschoolers zip, button, and tie

Children pack their own backpacks at goodbye circle

We use phrases like "You worked so hard on that" instead of just "Good job!"

A child who believes "I can do it" will try to read, even when it’s hard.

WING 2: Language & Early Literacy — "My Words Have Power"

We read 5+ books a day. But we do more than read:

• Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming games, sound hunts ("What else starts with B?")

• Print Awareness: Our name wall, labeling everything in the classroom

• Storytelling: Children retell stories with puppets and picture cards

• Writing Center: Always open with markers, crayons, stamps, and paper — no worksheets, just joyful mark-making

By Pre-K, most of our butterflies know all uppercase and lowercase letters, letter sounds, and can write their first name.

WING 3: Math & Problem-Solving — "I Am a Thinker"

No flashcards. Real math.

• Sorting laundry by color and size

• Measuring ingredients for play-doh

• Building towers and counting how many blocks until it falls

• Patterning with beads and Legos

• "How many plates do we need for lunch? Let's count!"

This is how children in our Aliante and North Las Vegas community learn to think like mathematicians — curious and persistent.

WING 4: Social Wings — "We Fly Together"

This is our superpower as a small-group home.

In a big center with 20 preschoolers, social skills get lost. At Destinee's Butterflies, with our small family-style group, we coach friendship all day:

• "Use your words: I’m feeling frustrated"

• "Can you ask her for a turn when she’s done?"

• Daily feelings check-in during circle time

• Grace and courtesy lessons: how to join play, how to say sorry sincerely

A Real Day of Kindergarten Prep

9:00 AM Circle Time: We practice raising hands, listening to friends, and sharing ideas. This is kindergarten sitting practice without it feeling like practice.

10:30 AM STEM Lab: Today: Cutting practice. Children cut curvy lines to make butterfly wings. This is scissors skill + fine motor + hand strength for writing later.

3:00 PM Preschool Centers: One group is at the writing table practicing names. Another is at the building center making a "bridge" and measuring. Another is in dramatic play running a "grocery store" — writing shopping lists and counting money.

Every activity has a purpose hidden inside the play.

How We Track Growth Without Pressure

You will never see a stressed-out 4-year-old at our center doing drills.

Instead, you’ll get:

1. Monthly Milestone Photos: Your child’s name writing in September vs. January vs. May.

2. Quarterly Readiness Check-ins: A simple, jargon-free report: "Antonia can now... Next we are working on..."

3. A Kindergarten Portfolio: At graduation, your child takes home a portfolio of their work — art, writing samples, photos — so you can SEE how far they’ve come from caterpillar to butterfly.
